  1. josh neufeld Says:

the near-future is looking very depressing … and very familiar. the idea of a W hotel, a KFC, and a Starbucks in downtown Baghdad is just too ridiculous to be dis-believed.

    and i’m oh so diggin’ goldman’s fan-freakin-tastic art/colors.

  2. jy Says:

    disco jihad, unbeliever fever

  3. John McCain Says:

Excelent guys, I love this graphical novel. can’t wait for the next part.

  4. chunkbot Says:

“Ice is Civilization!” huh I just watched Mosquito Coast yesterday :D

  5. Dean Haspiel Says:

Exemplary. This reads and looks so hip and modern yet sickens me to my very core. If this doesn’t become a graphic novel cum HBO series, I don’t know what time it is.

  6. Alexis Bleu Says:

Just when I thought it was gonna be a cake walk…BAM!
    Constant non-stop-in-my-face…give me the HEAT!

  7. minamitek Says:

This is great — love the artwork and the story is hideous (in a good way). keep it coming.

  8. tscan Says:

I loved the falafel comment on page 2 when Bill O’Reilly was talking. I’m assuming this was a reference to the sexual harrassment suit he got slammed with?

  9. Anthony Lappé Says:

tscan - you got it. nice catch

  10. Dick Trimble Says:

is that Maureen Dowd in the lobby?

  11. Dan Goldman Says:

yes, nice catch. take a closer look (if you can at web-resolution) at the magazine she’s reading and her facial expression as Jimmy enters the lobby.

  12. Andy Cohen Says:

This is brilliant, painful work. Thank you. Lots and lots of resonance.

And on a trite note: Is that really Wiley E. Coyote in the artwork in the W Hotel Lobby?!
So, is Dubya most telliingly a reference to Wiley and his hyperbolic insanity?! Hmmn.
Man, I sure hope this is more fiction than next-door future. I’m sick of this sh*t.

  13. Anthony Lappé Says:

It’s actually Wily on the flat screen TV. Any inferences to our current administration’s wrongheaded invasion of a country that posed no threat to us is unintentional.

  14. Ruben Says:

After ten thousand years of bloodshed in the Middle East, this version of reality is where we’re headed; no matter who winds up in the White House after the next (s)election.

  15. Belgand Says:

Very good, but it feels a lot like Brian Wood’s DMZ even though the specifics are changed.

  16. Joe Cortazzi Says:

Did you fashion that hotel clerk after Alexander Siddig (best known as Dr. Bashir from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the tragically noble sheik from Syriana)?

  17. Dan Goldman Says:

Sir, you have just earned yourself an official SHOOTING WAR Eagle Eye Award. Congrats!

I’ve always liked Siddig’s face in whatever role he plays; I sat and chewed the end of a pen thinking of who I’d “cast” in the W concierge role given Anthony’s description and suddenly got a big smile on my face.

  18. Anubis Says:

I gotta say this keeps on chuggin’ along with a nice pacing. I’d like to see more absurdist action though. This has gotta feel like a Bunuel film or its failing completely!!!

  19. Gary Roberts Says:

    You’re a good writer dude…I love this!

  20. David Preston Says:

Is the typo ‘Mutlispectral’ intentional? Must be using a Diebold keyboard. ;)

  21. Steven C Brown Says:

Muy Excellente for the Mosquito Coast quote. Fantastic parallel! Fantastic story!

  22. Grahamr Says:

Hey, are the guys with vests hanging around the base Blackwater mercs?
